Outpatient Speech Therapy

Common Speech and Language Disorders
"Speech and language disorder"covers a wide spectrum, and it is difficult to enumerate all the needs addressed at PCMC. The more common are these:

Stuttering, in both children and adults, is a widespread and yet highly treatable difficulty.

Stroke victims often lose speech ability or develop neurological disorders such as aphasia. PCMC is a Medicare-approved rehabilitation facility. This is good news for stroke victims who need private therapy after leaving the hospital.

Both high-functioning and low-functioning autistic patients are treated at PCMC, we can provide for close coordination of programs with the Public School system.

Cleft palate and other cranio-facial anomalies require expert professional care by a Speech Language Pathologist.

Childhood problems concerning the way language is processed or words articulated receive sensitive attention at PCMC. For instanceCentral Auditory Processing Disorder is the inability to understand spoken language in a meaningful way, in the absence of any hearing loss. This disorder can show very similar symptoms to a child who has an Attention Deficit Disorder. The patient with CAPD shows difficulty in processing information through the auditory channels, has reduced auditory discrimination, auditory memory, and auditory perceptual skills, which can greatly impact a patient's academic career. Frequently these children show problems in the areas of reading and spelling.

Likewise, adult voice and speech treatment, from accent reduction to vocal nodules, can also be successfully treated.
